Galway Races Summer Festival Ball Initiative Raised €100,000 in Support of Jockey Graham Lee and the Injured Jockeys Fund.

The Galway Races Summer Festival Ball that took place in August all in aid of renowned jockey Graham Lee, has achieved remarkable success, raising €92, 172 for Graham plus an additional €11,686 donation from Tote for the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund. The funds raised from the ball will now go directly to the Injured Jockey’s Fund to support Graham in his recovery.

Graham Lee, who has been an integral part of the horse racing community for over two decades, has faced huge challenges following a life changing accident last year at Newcastle Races. In response, the Galway Races Summer Festival Ball was organised to show both the racing industry and the community of Galway’s unwavering support in his recovery.

The prestigious event, held at The Galmont Hotel & Spa on Saturday 3rd August, attracted five-hundred guests from across the racing and local business community all gathered for an evening of solidarity, elegance, entertainment, all there to support their esteemed colleague and friend, Galwegian, Graham Lee. The evening was a spectacular success, featuring a blend of entertainment, fine dining, and heartfelt tributes.

Guests were welcomed by the charming Master of Ceremonies duo, Gráinne Seoige and Brian Gleeson. Attendees were treated to a gourmet dinner and lively musical performances from The Galway Tenors, Irish dancers ‘Cáirde’ and lively band ‘Sean Slattery and the Connections’, creating an atmosphere of celebration and goodwill. The highlight of the evening was the auction led by Colm ODonnellan, which featured exclusive racing memorabilia and unique experiences, donated generously by racing legends and supporters.

Among the distinguished guests were Graham Lee’s family, who were warmly embraced by the community. The event also saw the presence of legendary jockey Sir AP McCoy, accomplished riders Patrick Mullins and Rachael Blackmore to name but a few, as well as esteemed trainers Ado McGuiness and Peter Fahey. The evening was further graced by the Mayor of Galway City, Cllr Peter Keane, Suzanne Eade, CEO of Horse Racing Ireland, and Darragh O’Loughlin CEO of the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board, reflecting the strong support from the industry’s leadership.

Speaking about the event’s success, Michael Moloney Chief Executive of Galway Racecourse said, “we are overwhelmed by the generosity shown by everyone who attended and contributed to this event. The funds raised will make a significant difference not only in Graham’s life but also in supporting the welfare of jockeys via the Injured Jockeys Fund. Our event showcased the best of our local community here in Galway and the Racing Industry at large– the camaraderie, passion, and willingness to support one of our own was phenomenal.  Graham has been a remarkable figure in the world of racing, showcasing dedication, talent, and sportsmanship throughout his career. Our Summer Festival Ball gave us and people that know Graham and his family, the opportunity to give back to someone who has given so much to the sport we cherish.

Galway Racecourse would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the many people who made the event such a success and sincerely thank all that attended our Ball, for your presence and contributions, and to the many people and businesses that donated to the fund. Your generosity will make a significant impact, ensuring that Graham continues to receive the support he needs.”
