Developments to Date
Here at the Galway Race Course, we are constantly updating our facilities and renewing systems to make a trip to the Galway Races a unique experience for all involved; from race-goers to horse trainers and jockeys.
The number of people that visit the Galway Race Course increase each year. Keeping our facilities comfortable, pleasant and safe is a high priority with our management team.
Below are details on developments being planned and constructed. We have also outlined developments which have occurred in the recent past, all efforts have contributing as to why Galway Race Course is one of the most popular horse racing venues in the world.
Killanin Stand:
An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern officially opened the Killanin Stand on the 9th July 2007, in time for the Summer Festival Meeting.The Killanin Stand was built at a total cost of €22 million and accommodate’s 7,000 people with seating for 700 on the balcony. The new development has been generously grant-aided by Horse Racing Ireland to the amount of €10 million. The Design team consists of EPR Architects, Campbell Reith Structural Engineers, Gardiner & Theobald Project Managers, BDP Mechanical Engineers, Davis Langdon PKS Cost Consultants, A.P. McCarthy Planning Consultants and JCP Safety Consultants. Michael J. McNamara & Co were awarded the contract for the construction of the Killanin Stand.
The state of the art stand consists of 4 floors, the ground floor and first floor are available to all patrons. Food, Bar, Toilet and Tote facilities are available on both floors. Patrons can also have the added comfort of 700 free seats on the seating balcony, accessible from both the ground and first floor.
Patrons can enjoy Hospitality Facilities in the Plate and Hurdle Suites situated on the second and third floor.
Weigh Room, Administration Building, Media Centre
Tuesday 29th June, 2004, The Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism, Mr John O'Donoghue, TD officially opened state of the art facilities at Galway Racecourse. These facilities included a new weigh room, a media centre and an administration building. Completed at a cost of 1.4 million euro the new developments at Galway Racecourse are part of the Galway Race Course Committee's on-going commitment to expand and enhance, facilities at the course. Both male and female jockeys will be delighted with the new array of improved facilities. New jockey's rooms have been built which include male and female saunas. They also have use of a new weigh room and fully equipped medical centre. Owners and trainers are now offered a new, extended unsaddling area while stable staff will benefit from a new shower and toilet block in the stable yard area. The racing press and media will be accommodated in a high-spec media centre where they will also be provided with tote facilities. Punters will immediately notice the improved ease of access to the course thanks to the admissions building which allows for a far more efficient entrance than was previously possible.
This phase also includes the addition of a canteen and steward's room.
Pedestrian Underpass
The Pedestrian Underpass and new Entrance Building was completed in 2002, allowing punters free-flow access to the Race Meeting while racing is in progress.

The Millennium Stand:
Opened in 1999, The newly constructed Millennium Stand hosts a range new facilities including a variety of restaurants and bars, a hospitality room, tote facilities and a seating balcony.
Other developments of note:
- Tented Village: A new hospitality area developed for corporate hospitality
- Amenity Building: Constructed in 1991, includes a buffet restaurant, carvery restaurant, owners and trainers bar, stewards dining room and male and female toilets.
